PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Glory In The Church
Text: Eph. 3:21 - Unto Him be glory in the Church by Christ Jesus, throughout all
ages, world without end,
In the church is the place to glorify God, God has ordained that we are to honor
Him in this world through His church. Whatsoever we do it must be for the honor
and glory of God. The object of ALL CHURCH WORK IS TO GLORIFY GOD.
HOW DO BAPTISTS GLORIFY GOD?
1. They stand for morality. Clean living is the fruit of a christian life. The
moral standards of any community are raised when a Baptist church is organized in
it. Baptists preach against the sins of the flesh and hold before the world the kind of
life that the christians of the first century presented. When folks are saved the moral
side is elevated.
2. They stand for spirituality. There are many mistaken ideas in the reli-
gious world concerning the teaching of spirituality. Spirituality does not mean that
you can cry a lot. One who is spiritual will follow the teachings of the Word of
God. I have known many persons that will cry at the preaching of the word but will
not pay any attention to its doctrines. Observing the Word is spirituality, it is not
emotionalism.
3. They stand for separation between the church and the world. It is alright
for the church to be in the world but when the world get’s into the church it is in
the wrong place. Our Lord expects us to be a separate people, If the world cannot
tell the difference between itself and us we are not living for the Lord. We MUST
crucify the flesh with the lusts thereof, God has given us His method of mission
work, this we are to follow. He has given us His method of church government, this
we MUST follow. A life that is consecrated to the Lord will desire to know God’s
ways and methods for service.
4. They stand for separation of church and state. Render unto Caesar the
things that are Caesar’s and unto God the things that are God’s. It is not the busi-
ness of the church to run the government. It is not the business of the State to run
the church. Union of the Church and State has brought many heartaches to the
Lord’s people. Many lives have been taken because
of the same. Backus, in a letter to George Washington said something not to be
forgotten: “The most dangerous man is a clergyman armed with the powers of
government.” President Ulysses S. Grant, 1868, said: “Keep the church and State
separate.”
5. They stand for a divine ecclesiasticism. They are not of human origin.
They came from God. Baptists have no human head! All of the denominations of
the world can trace their beginning to some human head. This is not so with the
Baptists. The first Baptist came from God. John 1:6 The Bible and History furnish
proof of Baptist origin.
6. They stand for pure ordinances. The ordinances are for Christians, to be
administered by the churches. Baptism, immersion of the body in water is the bibli-
cal method. The Supper to be given to members of the local church. (No intercom-
munion).
7. They stand for equality in the membership. No bosses. Christ is the Head
and the church the body. Each church absolutely independent. Baptist believe that
the local church is a sovereign body. She is a self governing body. Baptists believe
in associating with each other in mission work, benevolent and christian education.
Baptists are also INTERDEPENDENT. The relationship of one church to another
is essential for the well being of the local church.
8. They stand for progressive benevolence in caring for the poor and help-
less, and in sending the Gospel to the lost. Baptists are quick to come to the assis-
tance of the poor, the orphans, and sending the Gospel to a lost and dying world.
Their chief concern is to seek and save the lost. They stand for God’s Word as their
Law, and an unquestioning obedience to all its requirements. The final SAY with a
Baptist is, “Is it taught in the Bible?” Baptists are not willing to accept tradition or
the words of the ancient fathers in matters of Faith and Practice. The Bible is the
RULE. Now I commend you to THE WORD,

Home Mission Report
We your committee on “Home Missions,” wish to submit the following:
We recommend that each local association encourage and support one or more
local missionaries within the boundries of their association, and that each church
be missionary in practice in her community.
We recommend that each church put forth a greater effort through her educa-
tional and training services to encourage every member to be a missionary in deed
and truth.
We further recommend that, in addition to supportinga local missionary each
church earnestly and prayerfully endeavor to establish missions in neighboring
communities where there are no Missionary Baptist Churches.

Christian Education Report
Christian Education is properly that part of the Lord’s Great Commission where
Jesus commanded the church to “Go
teaching them to observe all things whatso-
ever I have commanded you.”
Christian Education is, therefore, a ministry of the Lord’s church, It includes
any and all Bible teachings done under the authority of the New Testament church.
There are, at present, two schools in the State of California operated under the
ownership and control of churches working in the Cooperative Association of Cali-
fornia. By virtue of their sponsorship, these two schools deserve our recognition
and endorsement,
The California Missionary Baptist Institute and Seminary has presented an op-
erating budget of $1845 per month for the current year. This means that $345 more
per month is needed than was given last year to meet the complete budget of this
school.
This committee recommends that the churches of the Cooperative
20
Association increase their support so as to underwrite this budget.
The Missionary Baptist College, operated under the auspices of the Landmark
Baptist Church of Sacramento, is presently being supported by a number of church-
es within the state. We recommend that after the operating budget of the Bellflower
school is met that the churches support the Missionary Baptist College and seek to
meet its needs.

Christian Literature
“Study to show thyself approved unto God...” is Paul’s directive to Timothy
which is no less to us. It has ever been observed that the printed page is one of the
greatest forces for the promotion of any project or cause. An informed people are
never subdued by the enemies of freedom; they stand as individuals and refuse to
be swayed by mass movements into compromising the principles which they hold
dear.
Therefore, understanding these things we feel the best and most assuring thing
for the cause of Christ as Missionary Baptist champions is to place in the hands
of our people the best and most scriptural literature possible. Literature is never
intended to take the place of preaching the gospel but to suppliment and add to its
effectiveness.
In view of these facts we recommend our own publications: S.S. and Training
courses literature published by the Baptist S. S. committee in Texarkana; all of our
periodicals and especially the Gaurdian and the Sentinal published in California.
We further recommend that all who can, take correspondance courses offered by
our schools in our state.
And, last of all we urge everyone to study his Bible regularly and prayerfully
for it only is the imperative food of our souls.

Resolutions Committee Report
Whereas: The Attendance at our Associational meetings has grown so that few
if any of our churches have buildings adequate for entertaining the meetings,
Be it resolved: That we recommend that the entertaining church along with the
Publicity Director, secure a suitable building for the meeting. We further recom-
mend that offerings be sent to the publicity director by the cooperating churches, to
cover the expense of securing these accomodations.
Be it resolved: That we, the messengers of the churches composing the Coopera-
tive Missionary Baptist Association of Calif., recommend to the Sunday School
Committee of the American Baptist Association, to consider using the same scrip-
ture lesson for all classes in our Sunday School literature.

Publicity Report
My work this year pertaining to our state meeting was near my home and ex-
penses very small, We were $3.00 behind last year, Many said to me after the meet-
ing last year, “We sent money for publicity.” Unless you state so on your letter or
check our clerk does not and cannot turn it over to publicity. We worked with Bro.
Perdue in making plans for this meeting. We had an article in the Sacramento Bee
and there was to be a reporter present with us today. May God bless our State work.
I try to boost our churches and their mission and Christian education everywhere
I go.

STATE MISSION REPORT
(Harold Cole)
To the messengers of the churches composing the Calif. Cooperative Association
of Missionary Baptist Churches;
Christian Greetings:
22
It was my privilege to serve the churches represented in this great assembly for
the past few years as State Missionary, I moved to Garberville soon after the last
State Messenger Meeting, and tried to get a work started in that area, but was not
successful in doing so. It was at this time that I resigned the mission field. There
were two reasons for this decision. (1) My health was failing very fast, due to an
old ailment which could not be treated as long as I was moving from place to place.
(2) Our churches could not support two State Missionaries along with two schools
and all of their other mission work. I have nothing but praise for the great churches
of Calif. And I think they have made monumental strides in the last several years.
But I believe there is a limit to what we should ask them to do, Putting men on the
mission field and not supporting them is not progress. This practice will put us back
in the same condition that we struggled so hard to overcome a few short years ago.
I am happy to report that the churches made up my back salary after I had left the
mission field, and that I can report the full $500.00 per month for each month that
I was on the field this Associational year.
I am at present holding down a job, and helping the Sheridan Church.
Thanks to all who helped by their prayers and support to make this report pos-
sible. May God’s richest blessings rest upon each church engaged in carrying on
the Masters work.
Respectfully submitted
Harold Cole
STATE MISSION REPORT
To the churches composing the California Co-operative Association of Mission-
ary Baptist Churches:
Christian Greetings:
This has been a year of blessings far over and above the trials and tribulations.
All credit goes to the Lord and the full support of His churches in prayers and of-
ferings.
This year spent in building a congregation at the Eastside Missionary Baptist
Church has resulted in an average attendance
23
of 65. Most of these are young in both physical and spiritual lives. Patient teach-
ing is necessary to ground them in the Faith, Others have come in by baptism from
different faiths. These need patience and teaching as much if not more than young
people unentangled in the web of false doctrine, Members who have been Land-
mark Baptists for many years fail to exercise the compassion and patience toward
weaker brothers and sisters in Christ as they should.
These are the reasons I feel it is wise for me to remain with the Eastside Mis-
sionary Baptist Church for a while. They must not only become more established in
the doctrines of Christ but also gain confidence in one another. This must be done
or the past year’s work will have been in vain.
Since the Eastside Missionary Baptist Church can partially support their pastor,
I wish to go on the field on designated funds permitting other missionaries to be
supported as local churches see fit to do so.
Respectfully submitted,
C. H. Denney
REPORT OF STATE MISSION TREASURER
Through March 25, 1963
Dear Co-workers:
We have completed another year of service together for the Lord, Only His
coming will reveal the real scope of this year’s work. We have supported full time
missionaries for a total of 16 months this year--Bro. Cole for five months and Bro.
Denney for eleven months. Bro. Cole left the field in September.
This is a matter which should demand our most sincere prayers, for just two
years ago we had three full-time missionaries, and high hopes of keeping them paid
in full. In the main we did, but now we have only one missionary and the last two
months of this year, only $73 more than the recommended salary was received in
the treasurer’s office. It would appear that we have lost the meaning of cooperation
as it pertains to missions. In February there were only 48 churches cooperating in
our mission effort, and in March only 41,
Bro. Cole received on the field, from April 1, 1962, until Sept. 1962, when he
left the field because of ill health, $332.77
24
from the treasurer’s office, $4,613.31; making a total of $5,500.
All missionaries are paid in full the amount recommended by the messenger
body last year, and as of April 1, 1963, there is a balance in the treasury of $847.67.
A total of $28.00 was received during the year for office expense. The total of ex-
penses was $34.34.
L.E. McCalister -Treasurer
RESOLUTION
To the messengers of the churches of the Calif. Cooperative Association of Mis-
sionary Baptist Churches:
Greetings:
The Sunday School teachers and workers of the Landmark Missionary Baptist
Church are unanimous in desiring to see the Sunday School lessons of the A.B.A.
series adopt the same scripture lessons for all classes, It is felt that this will create
more togetherness in the Home Bible readings and studying of the lessons. Many
homes have the husband teaching a higher class and the wife teaching a lower
class. This also creates a difference in their studying. Therefore we have instructed
our pastor to present this problem to this messenger meeting to see if the feeling
is widespread among our churches. If so, the Baptist Sunday School Committee
could be notified of this feeling existing among the churches and take steps to cor-
rect it. We suggest the possibility of the Resolutions Committee acting on this also.
