MODERATOR’S ADDRESS
THE CHALLENGE BEFORE US
Brethren and Messengers of the Lord’s Churches, lappreciate the privilege
that is ours today. Baptists in past centuries have prayed, sacrificed, and died in ef-
forts to gain the privilege of such free assemblies as we enjoy today. We pay tribute
to their honored memory and thank God for the opportunities before us.
However, God-given opportunities present a demanding challenge to the
people who enjoy them. Our main business here today is to face this challenge with
both faith and determined action while the fields remain white unto harvest.
First, we face the challenge of promoting unity among the Brethren. We do
not accept the “union” of the present ecumenical movement of the religious world,
but we do pray and long for harmony and unity in the churches of the Coopera-
tive Association of California and of the American Baptist Association. Given this
unity in faith and purpose, nothing can be restrained from our accomplishments in
the work of Christ. May each of us dedicate himself to the task of promoting this
spirit in every action of this Messenger Meeting.
We also face the challenge of missions in our state. Much good has been
done during the past year, but greater things remain to be done in the years ahead.
Hundreds of cities in this state still do not have a Missionary Baptist Church leav-
ing many of our people with no scriptural place of worship. We should never be
satisfied until God’s people can find a scriptural New Testament Church in every
community of California, but we must attack this tremendous problem with a logi-
cal degree of reality that wi 1 establish attainable goals which our united efforts can
achieve from year to year.
4
Then, we face the challenge of moral and doctrinal purity in a decadent period
of world history. These are the days of apostacy, immorality, and atheistic formal-
ism in religion, and we must show by our works and our testimony that we do not
concur with either the methods or the purposes of m o n o I i t h i c a 1 movements
by apostates from the faith. We must remember that, “Just because everyone else
is doing it” doesn’t make anything right! God’s sacred word declares: “Thou shalt
not follow a multitude to do evil; neither shalt thou speak in a cause to decline after
many to wrest judgement. “ Exodus 23:2. The Second Epistle of John declares in
verse, 10, 11: “If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him
not into your house, neither bid him God speed. For he that biddeth him God speed
is a partaker of his evil deeds.” Baptist must continue to stand for the supreme au-
thority of the New Testament as the rule of our faith and practice; for the ordinances
of Christ to be kept as they were delivered, and that the church which Jesus built
must keep itself unspotted from the things of the world.
We also face the challenge of the unsaved masses around us today! What are
we doing to win lost men to Christ? May we never degenerate to the low level of
contention over methods of winning souls to Christ! Let us rather spend our time
in doing the work by what ever honorable and scriptural means we may find best
suited to our needs, keeping in mind the words of the Apostle Paul who said: “...I
am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. “ I Corinthians
9:22b.
My Brethren and Sisters in Christ, It is with joy and anticipation for good in
the cause of Christ and His Churches that I now open this 17th. Annual Session of
the Cooperative Association of Missionary Baptist Churches of California.

ANNUAL SERMON
by Hoyt Chastain
AGAINST ALL THE GODS OF EGYPT I WILL EXECUTE
JUDGMENT: I AM THE LORD.
TEXT: Exodus 12:12
The religion of Egypt was polytheistic more so than all of the nations of the
earth.
Their collection of gods and goddesses numbered more than twenty-two
hundred; each of them had a particular theophany. Harry Rimer says,”these gods
and goddesses had certain animals that were sacred to them, and inwhich animal
form theparticular god or goddess occasionally manifested a personal presence. So
very often the deities of Egypt are depicted in stone and painting as having a hu-
man body, but an animal head. Thus Thoth might be seen with an head of the Ibis,
while Hathor sometimes has a human head, but more often she is portrayed with
the head of the cow.”
Harry Rimmer further states, “There was first of all the grouping of the gods
into triads, which was a widely accepted custom. Since each triad consisted of a
god, a wife, and a son, this grouping is lass a degeneration of the principle of the
Trinity than might seem to he suggested at first thought. Rather, it was the glorifica-
tion of the FAMILY principle. “
The principle trinity among the Egyptian gods consisted of Amon-Ra, the
King of all the Gods, Mut, his wife, and Khons, their son.
Close examination of my text will reveal the fact that the plagues were not
directed specifically at the people of Egypt, but at their gods.
I.
FIRST, GOD STRIKES AT THE VERY HEART OF THE
EGYPTIAN GOD SYSTEM. THE RIVER NILE TURNED
TO BLOOD, Exodus 7:20-25.
The first plague was a direct thrust at a number of the most important
gods of that land. The Nile river was, itself, an object of worship. It was supposed
to have flown from the celestial stream called Nu, and was of heavenly origin. It
brought life to Egypt.
30
Osiris, cause of resurrection and everlasting life. The Nile was supposed to
be his blood stream. With Osiris fell Hapi, Nile-god, and Satet, the wife of Khne-
mu, the goddess of the annuel inundation. Her sister, Anqet, bit the dust that day.
She was the personification of the Nile waters. Many others, Isis-Sothis, IsisHa-
thor, Ament, Menat, Renpit and at least two score more, all of whom met defeat in
the first plague.
II.
SECOND PLAGUE, FROGS AND THEIR GODS,
Exodus 8:6-15.
Heqt, the wife of the great Khnum, whose theophany was the frog. She was
the “frog-goddess”, and this lowly creature was sacred to her. The frog was the
symbol of the resurrection and the emblem of fertility. God gave these Egyptians
so many of their gods that they were crying for their removal. They had gods in the
bed, bread pan and everywhere. They had all the gods that they wanted.
III.
PLAGUE THREE, LICE, Exodus 8:16-19.
This plague, among others, was directed at the gods of science and ele-
ments.
IV.
PLAGUE OF FLIES, Exodus 8:20-24.
Utachit was one of the fly gods. The ICHNEUMAN fly is the symbol of this
god. What variety of fly is intended in the text we cannot definitely say, as there are
numerous species of flies.
After this plague Moses was instructed by Pharaoh to worship in Egypt, but
Moses refused as God had commanded him to worship him in the wilderness, Exo-
dus 8:25-28. When the Devil is convinced that we are saved, he does not care if we
worship God if we worship Him on his (the devil’s) territory.
V.
THE FIFTH PLAGUE, MURRAIN ON THE CATTLE, Exodus 9:1-7.
Hathor was the chief of the gods of the cattle, she was the “cow-goddess”,
and was universally worshipped, and was to the human race of that day “mother”
principle of deity. Het- Hen was her most common name in the Egyptian language
and literally means “the house of Horus”. Other deities which met defeat in the
plague of murrain--Apis, the sacred bull. Temples all over
31
the land, or ruins of them, still stand today. He was one of the triune gods of the
resurrection. Nut, goddess of the sky, wife of Geb, she it was that produced the egg
out of which the sun was hatched. She has a female body, cow-head.
VI.
BOILS AND BLAINS, Exodus 9:8-12.
IMHOTEP was the god of medicine, and the guardian of all the healing
sciences.
RESPHU and QUTESH were the gods of storm and battle; they controlled
all the elements except the light.
The fact that the children of Israel did not have the plagues on them is proof
that God was protecting his children while smiting the worshipers of Imhotep,
Reshpu and Qetesh.
VII.
HAIL, Exodus 9:22-26.
The hail was proof that the gods of the elements were not able to cope with
JEHOVAH.
VIII. THE PLAGUE OF LOCUSTS, Exodus 10:12-15.
These ancient people ascribed the fertility of their fields and the abundance
of the harvest to certain specific deities. Boils, Hail and Locusts, one right after the
other, proved that the Egyptian gods had failed.
IX.
DARKNESS, Exodus 10:21-23.
The ninth plague struck at the great apex and head of all the great company
of the deities of Egypt. THOTH, who had worked out the system of the seasons as
they had been decreed by RA. THOTH, gave light by night. Thoth was inferior to
Ra and Horus.
SEKMET, fire-goddess, or of artificial light. She was the lioness-headed.
None of the gods of Egypt were reverenced as the great Horus, the Hawk-
headed. He was called the eye of Ra, and was the god of the noon-time sun. Ra was
the chief god of Egypt, and God smote his three theophanies, Sun, First born of the
cow, if the firstborn was a bull, and occasionally in the form of a ram.
X.
THE FIRST-BORN, Exodus 12:29-33. This tenth plague was a final punch
which knocked out the
32
Egyptian gods; Amon-Ra suffered a death blow, for the first born was supposed to
belong to him. In addition to Ra all the rest of the gods of Egypt were completely
defeated, and the language of the text stands as a monument to this day.
“Against all the gods of Egypt will I execute judgment: I AM THE LORD.”

FOREIGN MISSIONS
The challenge of the Gospel today, is great as it has ever been since the Lord
gave the great commission to “Go ye therefore into all the world”, but many doors
have been closed to the preaching of the Gospel. It is imperative, therefore, that we
enter without reservation, into all those doors which remain open to us.
The doors into Central and South America, Alaska, and Africa are open and
in drastic need of supported missionaries.
God is leading into these fields men of great ability to labor with those who
have in past years so ably braved the darkness and laid the foundations for their
fields.
We urge our churches to support these men who have sacrificed the blessings
of their homeland, and the warmth of Christian fellowship, and have gone, and are
going to take the good news to heathen lands.
While recognizing the fact that there are many good men who labor in for-
eign fields, we recommend that our churches support those men who are in har-
mony and affiliated with the American Baptist Association.
Knowing that an enlightened people are an active people, we urge each
church to include in its Christian program as much information as possible about
our Foreign Mission efforts.
Respectfully submitted by your Foreign Missions Committee.

HOME MISSION REPORT
We, your committee on home missions, wish to submit the following:
The Word of God is plain that missions must begin at home. Acts 1:8. If there
is no solid home mission base such as a strong local church or a group of churches,
there will be no state, interstate, or foreign mission work.
Therefore, we recommend that a greater effort be undertaken from the local
church standpoint.
We recommend a new evaluation of our home mission work. A number of
our local associations don’t have a missionary on the field for full time support.
We further recommend that the local churches be encouraged to support missions
beginning at home, Then into all the world.
Prayerfully submitted.

CHRISTIAN LITERATURE
Christian literature is literature which honors and emphasizes Christ and the
Bible truth. In this age when a flood of the devil’s literature spreads across this
nation, we should increase our use and study of Christian literature: Landmark
Baptist books, periodicals, papers and tracts.
We urgently need to emphasize Baptist publications of Christian literature,
that will fill the needs and desires of our members, that we might counteract the
heresy and corruption that is brain washing the minds of our young members and
our youth. To read and to publish Baptist publication is to exalt Christ and His word
and to enrich your mind and soul.
Therefore, this committee recommends that our people use Sunday School
and Training Course literature for Bible study. Also, our Baptist papers and scrip-
tural books, tracts, and helps from our book store.
We urge our churches and members to stock Baptist literature in churches
and homes and also encourage our youth to read and study it.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION
Included in the Great Commission given to the Lord’s churches is the com-
mand to teach all things which Christ commanded to be taught. This particular
phase of the Great Commission is very important. Without teaching the Scriptures
to God’s children, it would not be long until churches would cease to be zealous
evangelistically and sure doctrinally. Therefore, the necessity of Christian educa-
tion must be constantly stressed in our churches.
Christian education should begin in the homes of church memhers as they
teach their children the Word of God. In our Sunday Schools and Baptist Training
Course we should endeavor to religiously educate every member of our churches.
In addition to these areas of Christian education we should pray for and support our
two church-owned seminaries in the State of California. Both of these schools are
to be commended for their outstanding work in the field of higher Christian educa-
tion in which they are training ministers and Christian workers. They have proven
themselves worthy of our support. Therefore, let us endeavor in the next year to
give them liberal moral and financial support that they might be able to keep pace
with the demands of growth and advancement which they face.

COMMITTEE ON YOUTH ENCAMPMENT
We, your committee on the investigation of youth encampment wish to report the
following:
A trip was made to Southern California to interview Mr. Graham Tinning
of the Christian Encampment Association. This Association is an organization that
has officers and members in many states of our country and other countries.
Based upon this interview and other meetings and information that we, your
committee, have compiled, we wish to make the following recommendations.
1. We recommend that we continue to rent the facilities of other camps
for the next few years.
2. We recommend that we continue to try to find facilities in a central
part of the state.
3. We recommend that we cultivate the friendship and help of this Chris-
tian organization in securing future camp sites annually until we are able
to own our facilities.
4. We recommend that we consider creating a new office of Promotional
Director who will, among other things, help promote the encampments.
And if this office is created, it will work under the authority of the sponsor-
ing church.
5. We further recommend that we continue the committee on Youth En-
campment and that we defer any major decision on this report until the
Pastor’s Conference next fall.
6. We further recommend that the chairman of this committee call any
meeting which would further our cause of Youth Encampments.
Sincerely Submitted,

each local church responsible for the preaching of the gospel in her own immediate
area as well as in distant areas in a combined effort with sister churches, and
WHEREAS, sister churches in surrounding areas shouldhonorand respect the pre-
rogative of the local church in her own immediate area, and
WHEREAS, there are so many heavily populated areas where there are no Mis-
sionary Baptist churches, and
WHEREAS, the presence of brethren from out of town for the purpose of soliciting
and directingthe interests of dissatisfied members away from their home church to
a sister church in another town constitutes abreach of ministerial ethics and kindles
the disruption of fellowship in the local church and among sister churches, be it
RESOLVED, that the undersigned churches go on record as publicly deploring the
actions of any brethren who practice, condone, or attempt to proselyte members
from a sister church.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the undersigned churches condemn the prac-
tice of certain brethrenwho habitually go from place to place seeking to enlist the
excluded members of a local church in their work, such action being open contempt

MEMORIALS
As we view the names of these our brothers and sisters in Christ who have
gone on to be with our Lord, our hearts are saddened by a sense of great loss in the
work of Christ, and what their lives have meant to us personally. Yet we know they
have ceased from their labours and are at rest in the presence of God. May we live
a life of readiness to meet our Lord, as these Christian brothers and sisters surely
have done.
