MODERATOR’S ADDRESS
THE MISSION OF THE LORD’S CHURCHES IN THE WORLD
Brethren, messengers, and friends, it is an honored privilege to
serve you again as moderator. It was my happy privilege to so serve in 1955
and 1956. Thank you for this esteemed honor.
Missionary Baptists occupy a position similar to that of the Philip-
pians when the apostle Paul wrote unto them. Responsibility rests just as
heavily upon us.
‘That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without
rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among ye shine as
lights in the world.”
“Holding forth the word of life: that I may rejoice in the day of
Christ, and that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain.” (Philippians
2:15, 16)
Programs on the fleshly level, ministering to the flesh and natural
ambitions of men, now characterize most of the world churches. Preachers
on picket lines, demonstrating with the mob for worldly goals, is not an un-
common sight.
Ecumenical efforts, with the various alliances, have become so
popular that it puts Baptists in a bad light in the eyes of the world. However,
we must not let the grand truths and doctrines we espouse be darkened for
the sake of greater favor among men. The light of the knowledge of Christ is
the world’s need and we must go forth with the torch of truth into the dark-
ness that surrounds men.
Our mission to the world is of a spiritual nature to prepare men for
eternity. The strongest repudiation that we can give to the ‘hew religious
concepts” is to remain faithful to God and steer a straight course, guided
by the unfailing compass of God’s Word. Our mission is briefly set forth in
these words from Matthew 28:19, 20.
‘Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name
of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. “
‘Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you:
and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.”
4
We reject the “one-world church” idea and must obey our Lord
in continuing to ‘Go” with the truth of the Word of God. Others may go as
they please and with what they please, but we must obey the orders of our
Great Commander and Captain of our souls. To Him we must give an ac-
count of our stewardship.
We can take justifiable pride in the work already done and that be-
ing done by Missionary Baptists. Lest we lost site of our work may we be
reminded that more mission effort is being put forth on a wider scale and
with better support than of any previous time. Our churches are all busy
expanding the work and strengthening it in their own areas, while giving
more to missions than in the past. While meeting the challenge of changing
times ‘head-on”, the clear-cut doctrines of Christ, as held dear by our fore-
fathers and set forth in the Bible, are still being upheld. The time honored
practices of Baptists from the days of the apostles still mark our churches
as the ‘Peculiar” people of God in this age.
Yet, there is so much more to do than has ever been accomplished
that more and more labourers are needed in the harvest. Men still need
Christ as Saviour. Christians still need to become established in the faith
that was once delivered to the saints. Personal service, and sacrifice, and
responsibility is still required.
The continuing nature of our mission is more effectively and com-
pletely carried out through cooperation. May God give us the spirit of a
sound mind and guide us by His Spirit as we counsel together as Brethren.
May this meeting be used of God to His glory and to the advancement of
His work through His churches.
The integrity of you who have met here, my Brethren, is not
doubted, and I feel confident that this city and community, with the spon-
soring church and the churches of the surrounding area will feel no regret
for our having been here. It is in joyful anticipation of an harmonious and
profitable meeting that I now declare this eighteenth annual session of the
Cooperative Association of Missionary Baptist Churches open and ready to
attend to the business for which we have met.

ary Baptist Churches of Christ the following Articles of Agreement.
ARTICLE I
Name
The Cooperative Association of Missionary Baptist Churches of
California.
ARTICLE II
Object
The object of this Association is to encourage co-operation and
Christian activity among the churches, to promote interest in and encourage
Missions on a New Testament basis among all people, to stimulate interest
in Christian literature, general benevolence, and Christian education and
to provide a medium through which the churches may co-operate in these
enterprises.
ARTICLE III
Members
Section No. 1--This association shall be composed of Missionary
Baptist Churches as defined in article number thirteen of the declaration of
faith in J. M. Pendleton’s church manual.
Section No. 2--The annual or called sessions of this Association
shall be held by messengers elected by the churches composing said As-
sociation.
Section No. 3--Each church cooperating in this Association is en-
titled to three messengers whose qualifications shall be determined by the
church selecting them. They are to bring letters showing their election by
the church, which letters should give a report of their past year.
6
Section No. 4--We recommend to all Scriptural New Testament
churches, desiring to cooperate with us for the purpose designated in Ar-
ticle II of these Articles of Agreement, express their desire to this body.
ARTICLE IV
Doctrinal Statute
This Association shall recognize the freedom of speech as essen-
tial to the highest achievements in its work. It shall stand or fall on its own
conformity to truth. It shall exercise no ecclesiastical authority but it shall
by every precaution recognize the sovereignty of every individual church.
It shall also encourage on the part of churches and mess eager s the great-
est possible freedom of expression in discussing matters pertaining to its
work, and in the preeminence of missions and evangelism in the work of
the churches.
ARTICLE V
Powers
The powers of this Association shall be limited to the execution
according to teachings of the New Testament of the will of the churches
composing it; and the Association, in annual sessions, shall elect such
officers as are necessary for its deliberation and work, and appoint such
committees as are needed, and transact other business as may be directed
by the churches.
ARTICLE VI
Officers
Section No. 1--It will be the duty of the messengers annually to
elect from among their members a Moderator, two Assistant Moderators,
and such Clerks and other Officers as may be needed or directed by the
churches composing this association.
Section No. 2--In all votes of this Association a majority of votes
cast shall decide questions; except in cases of change or amendment in
the Articles of Agreement. In such cases a two-thirds majority will be re-
quired. Such changes must be presented on the first day of the Association
and voted on during any subsequent day.
7
ARTICLE VII
Missionary Committee
Section No. 1--The Missionary Committee shall be composed of
one member from each cooperating Church, when so elected by the church.
Eleven of these shall be elected by the messenger body as a standing com-
mittee. The duty of this committee will be to carry out the expressed wishes
of the cooperating churches through their messengers to this Association,
and the distribution of information concerning the needy fields of labor
and the needs of the missionaries. Five members of this committee will
constitute a quorum when due notice has been given a called meeting by
the secretary of the committee to the churches.

received between sessions of this messenger body subject to the will of the
sending church or churches; keep a file of reports of the missionaries, audit
their reports, and publish reports of the work at least quarterly, (monthly if

ly distributed among the various sections of the churches which cooperate
with this association.

Christ’s first and last order to His church was “go--- go to the
lost, telling them of saving grace and of Christ’s promises to them, mak-
ing disciples of them, and teaching them to be observant of His Word.
There is a great need today for pastors and churches to realize that Christ’s
orders are still for His churches to “go”---be mission-minded---to see to
the needs of our mission fields at home and the needs of the missionaries
who serve on these fields.
One great need is for us to consider seriously the necessity of
our missionaries being fully supported.
We recommend therefore that a greater effort be made to sup-
port these God-called, church-sent messengers of faith.
Another pressing need today is the acquisition of suitable church
property. With county and city building codes becoming more restrictive,
and the cost of land spiralling, it is very difficult for a new church to ob-
tain and develop property.
We recommend therefore that our pastors and churches actively
support and encourage others to take part in the Land for Missions pro-
gram sponsored by the Freedom Missionary Baptist Church.

FOREIGN MISSION REPORT
The Lord’s command to his church was ‘Co ye therefore into
all the world” or a better rendering would be, as ye go into all the world
preach the gospel.
It is understood and normal for the Lord’s churches to go. The
church that Jesus gave that first commission to was a Missionary Baptist
Church.
Because we are Missionary Baptist Churches associating to-
gether it is expected and it is normal for these churches to go into all the
world.
Where does ‘Into the world” start? It starts with our kindred
acquaintance, my neighbors and yours.
33
Foreign missions are not only missions done in other coun-
tries, but Foreign Missions also could be defined as mission work done
among people whose language, social background and customs are dif-
ferent from ours.
We urge our churches to support these men who have sac-
rificed the blessings of their homeland and the warmth of Christian
fellowship, and have gone, and are going to take the good news to
heathen lands.
We recommend that our churches support these men who are
in harmony and are affiliated with the American Baptist Association
who we deem scriptural.
Inasmuch as this messenger body has in the past recognized
the men who are missionaries to foreign languages, within the bound-
aries of this state as State Missionaries, we further recommend this
practice be continued.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION
The church is essentially an education institution. Her found-
er told her to ‘Teach all nations ‘Tor the purpose of bringing the lost to
salvation and to be ‘teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I
have commanded you “for the strengthening of the saved. The apostle
Paul summarized well the educational responsibility of the church in-
stitution by saying, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the
Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on Him in whom they
have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they
have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how
shall they preach, except they be sent?”
The churches should therefore reach out to the lost with the
Word of Life and should strengthen the saved with God’s de-vine text-
book for living, The Bible. These casks can be accomplished through
the Sunday School, the Baptist Training Course, the Preaching and Bi-
ble Study Services, and individualized Home Training. For those who
feel a call to special service, our two outstanding church-supported
seminaries are available and ready to equip one to face the challenge
of the Lord’s work.
34
What can you do to help in Christian education? You can do a
great many things! Become an educated Christian! Become a financial
backer of this work! Become a Christian who prays unceasingly for the
Lord’s business! In short - become concerned! Become involved!

CHRISTIAN LITERATURE
Believing Christian literature to be a great asset to every Chris-
tian, yet knowing it is very common to neglect its use; We, your commit-
tee on Christian literature, recommend each of our associational churches
make special effort to endorse, recommend and provide for use only read-
ing matter that is scripturally inspired doctrinally sound, and baptistically
oriented.
We believe it is the duty of each local church to keep before
their people the need to be well informed as to proper Christian living,
building of Christian character and instilling as well as maintaining a true
Christian vision.
We feel the Herald published by the Missionary Baptist Col-
lege in Sacramento and the Sentinel published by California Missionary
Baptist Institute in Bellflower are good, doctrinal and informative papers.
We thus recommend the emphasis of their placement in the hands of our
people through bulk subscription by local church or by individual sub-
scription.
We also recommend the use of A B A Sunday School and church
teaching aids, and books published by Missionary Baptist authors and
sold through our bookstores. (Our schools in Bellflower and Sacramento
have bookstores for which you may select many helpful books.)
We further recommend that the Bible be recognized as our text-
book in every need of final and sufficient authority. Further that this Di-
vinely inspired book always be first in our reading and all other writings
be secondary.
Submitted by your committee on Christian literature.

Motion and second was made to reimburse Sis. Isenhower
$31.50. Her home was broken into in March and the $31.50 money left
from last years State Auxiliary Meeting was taken. She had replaced this
money. The motion carried.
Sister Magness made a motion to go back to your auxiliaries
and encourage them to send money for minutes, building rental and gen-
eral expenses of our State Auxiliary Meeting. This was necessary be-
cause so few of our churches auxiliaries sent an offering with their letter.
The motion carried.
The program for the evening -- ‘Your Life and His Return”--
was introduced by the First Vice President, Sis. Lovada Magness. The
first part ‘Personally Prepare for His Coming” by Sis. Mary McCalister
from North Highlands.
A special in song was rendered by Sis. Karen Jones of Brent-
wood.
46
The second part “Patiently Serve until He Comes” was given by
Marie Andrews.
Sister Betty Kolosky from McFarland rendered a special in
song.
After the completion of the program, Sis. Caves called for an-
nouncements.
Sis. Caves the outgoing President introduced Sis. Magness to the
body, as the new President for the ensuing year. Sis. Irese McKellip led
the dismissal prayer.
There were sixty-three auxiliaries represented and a total of
$169.00 sent in to the state meeting.

LADIES AUXILIARY REPORT
The Women’s Auxiliary of the Cooperative Association of Missionary Baptist
Churches of California met in regular session at 5:30 on April 8, 1968. The purpose of this
auxiliary is to en-courage activity among the ladies in all phases of local church work. We
seek to encourage churches without auxiliaries to join us in serving Jesus Christ through
this medium.
Reports from the District Auxiliaries were given, fol¬lowed by the program en-
titled ‘Your Life and His Return”, which was well presented by each lady taking part.
The goal for the coming year is the California Mission Development.
Respectfully submitted,
Mrs. Paul Magness,
President
