“ANNUAL ADDRESS”
By Dwight Patterson
“AN OPEN DOOR”
SCRIPTURE READING: Revelation 3:8, “I know thy works: behold I have
set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little
strength, and hast kept my word, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied
my name.”
Messengers of the churches composing the Co-operative Association of
California, visitors, and distinguished guests:
It is with great pleasure and a honored privilege that I will try to serve as
your moderator this year.
Messengers of the Lord’s Churches have congregated here today, to deliber-
ate, council together and to make recommendations, that we believe have
been directed by the leadership of the Holy Spirit.
We are not here to settle differences (if there be any) between churches,
or between brethren or between brethren and churches, but to promote the
cause of Christ through cooperation.
May I reflect the purpose of our coming together in this meeting as found
in our yearbook, Article II--
‘The object of this Association is to encourage co-operation and Christian
activity among the churches, to promote interest in and encourage Missions
on a New Testament basis among all people, to stimulate interest in Chris-
tian literature, general benevolence, and Christian education and to provide
a medium through which the churches may cooperate in these enterprises.”
The Lord spoke to the church at Philadelphia, saying that He had set before
them an open door.
The Lord’s Churches in California have an open door before them.
6
It is with thanksgiving in our hearts and pride in the churches that we look
back over the short twenty-two year history and see how God blessed us.
At the organization of the California Co-operative Association of Mission-
ary Baptists Churches on February 12, 1952 there were 17 churches. They
had baptized 309 for that year. Bro. C. C. Middleton was elected Moderator
and Bro. Martin Canavan was elected clerk, and he has served faithfully in
this office for these twenty-two years.
Approximately 90 days later on May 13, 1952 thirty churches met at Armona
for their first official Associational Meeting of the Cooperative Association.
Those of our preacher brethren, that help to formulate and to put into prac-
tice the articles of agreement, that have outstripped us in this life having
gone on to be with the Lord are, Brethren L. M. Branch, M. B. Hubbard, C.
R. Lyons, M. J. Duncan, and J. C. Patterson. These great men of faith have
given us the torch as it were, may we keep it burning brightly until we too
are relieved of our duty.
Our churches are strong in Spirit, fervent in zeal and rich in love, love for
the lost and love for the truth.
Our 1971 “Yearbook” list 100 churches, with a membership of 12,518 and
1,503 having been baptized that year. $1,361,774.94 was given to the cause
of Christ. Truly God has blessed His churches!
FIRST, THERE IS THE OPEN DOOR OF MISSION WORK:
We are the most populous State in the Nation. Truly the fields are white unto
harvest.
I say unto you, if God has burdened your heart for mission work, then lift up
your eyes and look on the fields in California. Though we have made great
stride in these short 22 years yet there are thousands of cities and towns
without a New Testament Church in them. The Lord has an open door before
us to preach the Gospel to the Negro and Spanish people. Oh, how we need
to pray the Lord of the harvest to send forth labourers into the vineyard! We
need to raise our voice and say to those that are standing idle, ‘Come Over
and Help Us. “
7
We have the golden opportunity through California Mission Development
to join hands one with another in helping to secure property and build build-
ings for our mission points and small churches.
In these days of inflation and high prices we cannot expect a mission point
to secure property and become self-supporting in a year or two. We must co-
operate together if new and realistic goals are reached. Think what we could
accomplish if all of the 12, 000 Missionary Baptist would give $1.00 per
month to this mission program. Why can’t this become a reality? I say that it
can if we the messengers of the Lord’s Churches in California will challenge
our churches when we go back home to see the possibility of bringing Glory
and Honor to the Lord through this means.
SECOND THE OPEN DOOR OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION:
With our two great schools in our State and with men and women dedicated
to the task of teaching those who would give their lives to fuller service for
the Lord, our work will continue to go forward.
Our schools afford sound fundamental teaching by sound baptist. So to you,
young men, who are preparing for a life of service in the ministry, look no
farther for a firm foundation of truth to build upon, it is here.
I say to you young men and women, our schools cannot be surpassed by any
in the nation. Therefore young men and women, stay in the west.
THIRD THERE IS THE OPEN DOOR IN YOUTH WORK:
One of the highlights of our work is our annual Youth Encampments. Many
have been saved, lives have been surrendered to the Lord through our youth
work.
May we continue to put strong emphasis upon our Church sponsored Youth
Encampments, that many will come to know the Lord and find their place of
service in a New Testament Church.
I pray for the day when we can have a camp for Missionary Baptist Youth,
that will be available for young people, not for a few weeks out of the year
but for 52 weeks in the year.
8
The work ahead will be hard, and the obstacles will be trying, but by the help
of the Lord and co-operation one with another we can succeed.
LAST THERE IS THE OPEN DOOR OF FELLOWSHIP:
We have the opportunity to show our love one for another in the Spirit of
fellowship and co- operation as we take care of the Lord’s business.
We can show to our home churches that have sent us to this meeting that we
are worthy of their confidence by conducting ourselves as becometh Chris-
tian men and women. We can show to the City of Tulare that we are Chris-
tian Ladies and Gentlemen in these meetings both in the Auditorium, and in
the cafes.
We have the opportunity to set an example for others to follow. Those across
the nation and around the world, yes even to the next generation. (If the Lord
should delay His coming.)
Truly the eyes of the world are upon us today. What we do here at the mes-
senger meeting will go down in our records and no doubt baptist history
will reflect either good or bad our actions here. Not only will our actions be
recorded in our yearbook for others to see but they will be recorded in the
archives of Heaven, and we as men, the leaders of our churches will have to
give an account some day.
With this solemn warning, may we then, with Godly fear, and a deep sense
of reverence approach the Lord’s Business that is at hand.

Object
The object of this Association is to encourage co-operation and
Christian activity among the churches, to promote interest in and encourage
Missions on a New Testament basis among all people, to stimulate interest
in Christian literature, general benevolence, and Christian education and to
provide a medium through which the churches may co-operate in these en-

Baptist Churches as defined in article number thirteen of the declaration of
faith in J. M. Pendleton’s church manual.

church, which letters should give a report of their past year.
10
Section No. 4--We recommend to all Scriptural New Testament
churches, desiring to cooperate with us for the purpose designated in Article
II of these Articles of Agreement, express their desire to this body.
ARTICLE IV

This Association shall recognize the freedom of speech as essential
to the highest achievements in its work. It shall stand or fall on its own
conformity to truth. It shall exercise no ecclesiastical authority but it shall
by every precaution recognize the sovereignty of every individual church.
It shall also encourage on the part of churches and messengers the great-
est possible freedom of expression in discussing matters pertaining to its
work, and in the preeminence of missions and evangelism in the work of the
churches.
ARTICLE V
Powers
The powers of this Association shall be limited to the execution ac-
cording to teachings of the New Testament of the will of the churches com-
posing it; and the Association, in annual sessions, shall elect such officers as
are necessary for its deliberation and work, and appoint such committees as
are needed, and transact other business as may be directed by the churches.
ARTICLE VI

from among their members a Moderator, two Assistant Moderators, and
such Clerks and other Officers as may be needed or directed by the churches
composing this association.
Section No. 2--In all votes of this Association a majority of votes
cast shall decide questions; except in cases of change or amendment in the
Articles of Agreement. In such cases a two-thirds majority will be required.
Such changes must be presented on the first day of the Association and voted
on during any subsequent day.
11
ARTICLE VII
Missionary Committee
Section No. 1--The Missionary Committee shall be composed of
one member from each cooperating Church, when so elected by the church.
Eleven of these shall be elected by the messenger body as a standing com-
mittee. The duty of this committee will be to carry out the expressed wishes

Section No. 5--The membership of the Missionary Committee shall
be fairly distributed among the various sections of the churches which coop-

12
Section No. 2 — The Treasurer of this Association shall hold all
funds received between sessions of this Association subject to the designa-
tion of the sending church or churches.

committees. The congregation sang “When We All Get To Heaven.” We

FOREIGN MISSION REPORT
We, your Foreign Mission Committee submit the following:
As Missionary Baptist Churches, we believe the responsibility as well as
the authority of the Great Commission rests upon each local church. This
Commission is declared by our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ in Matthew
28:19-20.
We are not only instructed to make disciples, but baptize them and teach
them all of the commands of the Lord.
Many opportunities have availed themselves to the Churches of the Coop-
erative Association of M.ssionary Baptists of California, in various fields
throughout the world. These opportunities increase our responsibility to car-
ry out the full commission. This entails involvements with Laborers, Money
and Faith.
Our main concern is to work with and pray for laborers as they enter Mis-
sion Fields.
Respectfully submitted by,
D. S. Madden
M. Heckler
Ron Cowger

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION
We, your committee on Christian Education, offer the following sugges-
tions:
Christian education is second only to the all-important task of winning souls
to Christ and baptizing them. Every means possible should be used (ac-
cording to God’s Word) to provide an education in Biblical teachings that
will enable every child of God to be successful for the cause of Christ. We
recommend that each church realize the task that is set before us and not be
guilty of just making disciples for the sake of numbers, but carry out all of
the commission that the Lord gave His church. We recommend the graded
system of Sunday School teaching and support the idea of basic doctrinal
teaching of each new convert that he may not ‘be ashamed” or be found
lacking when confronted with the devices that Satan uses to destroy Chris-
tian effort. Each church of the Lord Jesus Christ should carefully evaluate
the methods of our teaching andthen approachthem with new zealand press
forward to the very best for the cause of Christ.
We recommend also that all of the churches in our affiliated work vigorously
support with prayer and finance our church sponsored Missionary Baptist
Schools.
Christian Education Committee,
Charles Denney
Ray Bynum
Larry Reeves
CHRISTIAN LITERATURE
The challenge of God to all Christians sends us to the Holy Word of God for
our Divinely inspired working orders. It is His desire for all of His children
to be full grown and mature soldiers. To do so we must search the word. We
must study to show ourselves approved unto God, workmen who need not
bow our heads in shame, but workers able to rightly divide the word of God.
(II Timothy 2:15) The thorough search of the word of God and application
thereof to our lives will indeed enable us to stand as perfect, mature, (Mat-
thew 5:48) and fully furnished workers of God. (II Timothy 3:16-17)
45
We believe the literature published by the Baptist Sunday School Commit-
tee of the American Baptist Association is a valuable teaching aid in the
study of the scriptures. We believe it is sound and true to the Bible. We also
emphasize the need to always make all teaching aids conform to and be true
to the Word of God.
We encourage the support of religious papers published by our Missionary
Baptist brethren which present Missionary Baptist beliefs and practices.
We earnestly request that our Missionary Baptist Brethren encourage and
promote the reading and study of the Bible and Bible related books and
study material which presents Jesus Christ as man’s only hope.
Respectively submitted,
L. T. Fiser, Jr.
James B. Powers

RESOLUTION
Whereas, many so-called “Christians” oriented groups and movements are
flourishing on our High School and College Campuses,
Whereas, many of our Missionary Baptist High School and College students
are being exposed to the teachings, beliefs, and tenets of these groups and
movements,
Whereas, some concern has been expressed by our Missionary Baptist Young
People pertaining to their envolvement with such groups or movements,
Therefore, be it resolved that we encourage our Missionary Baptist Young
People to seek fellowship with other Missionary Baptist Young People and
any Group, Movement, or Fellowship under the sponsorship of a local Mis-
sionary Baptist Church.
Be it furtner resolved, that we encourage our sister churches to provide the
wholesome and constructive fellowship needed by our Missionary Baptist
Young People, as well as the necessary teaching relative to the Local New
Testament Church and its relation with other Groups or Movements.
