DEDICATIONS
This yearbook is dedicated to the memory of Brother A.D. Compton Jr.
Bro. Compton was born Dec. 17,1929 and passed from this walk of life
June 10, 7972.
In taking up pen to write those lines in memory of him who was so
much to us, we are
thankful that we can say that we will not be lacking in that which one would
wish to pen in memory of him. We have known him for many years. We
have been with him in the pulpit, upon the highway, in the home and we
have learned from this association with him that he was a “man” with all
that this word implies; we go farther and say that he was an exemplary man.
He had his “faults and weaknesses,” as is common in the human family,
and from which no man has as yet escaped either before or since Christ was
here upon the earth in person. We have loved him because he has always
stood for truth, justice, and virtue; we have love him because his was an
influential life but we do not stop here as though his influence had died with
him as some would love to think but we go farther and say that his influence
will live on as long as mankind is permitted to remember him.
His work has been such in the ministry that none can question his as
having been a christian life.
And so we await the time when with the redeemed of earth we shall all
stand both small and great before God, and there we are assured through the
hope we have in Christ that we shall see him who was so dear to us crowned
with a crown which the Lord, the Righteous Judge shall give to him in that
day, and there it seems to us the many souls led to Christ by him shall rise
up and call him blessed.

This 1973 yearbook is dedicated in memory of Bro. and Sis. L.S. Cotton,
charter members of the Visalia Missionary Baptist Church.
Bro. Cotton passed from this life in 1960. Sis. Cotton passed on in 1973.
Both of these fine people had given many years of service to the Lord and
His Churches in this area. Bro. Cotton was a deacon and served faithfully
in that capacity. Sis. Cotton was the highest example of a deacons wife in
every way.
The Cottons came to California in 1937 and settled around Earlimart.
They joined the Corcoran Missionary Baptist Church and were members
there for several years. At the 1940 State Association held in Corcoran Bro.
Cotton served as a messenger and on the Divine Services Committee. Sis.
Cotton spent most of her time at that associational meeting cooking for the
people.
In 1952 at the 1st meeting of the Calif. Cooperative Assoc. Bro. and
Sis. Cotton were on hand to assist in the organization. Bro. Cotton was a
messenger from the Corcoran Church.
Bro. and Sis. Cotton are the kind of people who are truly missed in our
church and associational work. Our prayer should be, “Thank you Lord for
sending the Cottons our way and for the privilege of working with them in
the church. And please Lord if you see fit send us two more just like them.”

DOCTRINAL STATEMENT
1. We believe in the verbal inspiration and infallibility of the whole Bible
as originally written, and that the Bible is the all sufficient rule of faith and
practice, II Timothy 3:16,17.
2. We believe in a personal, triune God, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
equal in Divine perfection, Matthew 28:19.
3. We believe in the Genesis account of creation, Genesis 1.
4. We believe in the virgin birth of Jesus Christ, Matthew 1:20.
5. We believe in the Deity of Jesus Christ, John 10:30.
6. We believe His crucifixion and suffering was substitutionary and vicari-
ous, II Corinthians 5:21.
7. We believe in the bodily resurrection and ascension of Christ and the
bodily resurrection of His saints, I Corinthians 15.

bodily, as the crowning event of the Gentile age, Acts 1:11.
9. We believe the Bible doctrine of eternal punishment of the finally im-
penitent, Matthew 25:46.
10. We believe the church of Jesus Christ is a congregation of scripturally
baptized believers that each church is independent, and that no other ecclesi-

servants of the churches.

bership of the local New Testament Church as a memorial of the Lord’s
death, until He comes again, I Corinthians 11:26.

“CHANGING TIMES”
Annual Address by DWIGHT PATTERSON
Today we are living in “changing times” I’m confident that many pre
sent here today have seen great changes in their lifetime. The change from
using horse drawn plows and wagons to driving tractors and automobiles;
from raising your own vegetables and dressing your own meats to shopping
in ultra-modern supermarkets; from riding in trains to flying in super-jets;
from listening to the old battery-powered radios to becoming enslaved to the
super console color television.
We have seen the flash of the atomic and hydrogen bombs that inspire
fear in the hearts of the bravest men as they realize that just one of these
bombs of destruction can obliterate whole cities in one gigan-
We have seen men land and walk on the moon in our own living rooms
by way of color televisions and radio satellites in the sky.
We have seen the language of our times change. Now words have been
coined to accommodate the “space age”. Words that were once considered
vulgar and profane are now used openly, and accepted as the norm by the
masses.
We have seen changes in the fashion world. The dress length goes up
and down from year to year similar to a child’s yo-yo! It seems as the dresses
get shorter, menJ
dresses get shorter, men’s hair gets longer! The trend of the ‘times is “Uni-
sex”.
With all these changes at such a fast pace, it makes one cry out, “Even
so come Lord Jesus”!
There is no doubt that many of the recent changes have been to the bet-
terment of man...especially in the field of medicine and technology.
However, the most startling changes have been in the field of religion.
The ecumenical movement is gaining ground daily. Expo ‘72 and Key
‘73 programs have added new fuel to the fires of unity and compromise!’
8
Unity seems to be the cry of the times. Recently the Catholics, in con-
junction with 150 assorted Protestant groups, featured Pat Boone in an “All
Together Sing” in Los Angeles.
Religious groups that were once considered sound in their theology but
irregular in some of their practices, (even to the point of wearing the name
“Baptist”) have begun to ordain women to the ministry in direct conflict
with Bible truths!
Truly there can be no doubt that we are living in the Laodecian era! If
there were ever a time that we should take a strong stand against error and
heresy, and “earnestly contend for the faith that was once delivered to the
saints”, it is NOW...when man’s programs have been substituted for God’s
way!
Christendom cries out, “We are rich”, “Our number is growing”, “We
have need of nothing”. But, in all reality, they are “blind”, “poor”, “wretch-
ed”, and “naked of the imputed righteousness of Christ.
May I quote the words of the Apostle Peter as a reminder of our needs
and dependence upon the Lord
II Peter 3;1-4, “This SECOND EPISTLE, BELOVED, I NOW
WRITE UNTO YOU; IN BOTH WHICH I STIR UP YOUR
PURE MINDS BY WAY OF REMEMBERANCE: BY THE
HOLY PROPHETS, AND OF THE COMMANDMENTS
OF US THE APOSTLES OF THE LORD AND SAVIOUR;
KNOWING THAT FIRST, THAT THERE SHALL COME IN
THE LAST DAYS SCOFFERS, WALKING AFTER THEIR
OWN LUSTS AND SAYING, WHERE IS THE PROMISE OF
HIS COMING? FOR SINCE THE FATHERS FELL ASLEEP,
ALL THINGS CONTINUE AS THEY WERE FROM THE
BEGINNING OF CREATION.”
Those days that Peer spoke of are here NOW.
May we remember that our God whom we serve and one day will stand
before and give an account to HAS NOT CHANGED.
Mal. 3:6. “ FOR I AM THE LORD, I CHANGE NOT
9
The purpose of our meeting here today HAS NOT CHANGED.
“The object of this Association is to encourage co-operation and Chris-
tian activity among the churches, to promote interest in and encourage mis-
sions on a New Testament basis among all people, to stimulate interest in
Christian literature, general benevolence, and Christian education and to
provide a medium through which the churches may cooperate in these en-
terprises.”
May we remember that our purpose in meeting here today in Visalia
remains the same as it was twenty-three years ago.
May I emphasize to you as strongly as possible, that we are here as
messengers of the Lord’s Churches to deliberate and council messengers
of the Lord’s Churches to deliberate and council with one another, and that
above all else, we must depend upon the leadership of the Holy Spirit and
thus saith the Word of God!
The Commission has not changed. The task of preaching the Gospel to
every creature is still the commandment of the Lord for today, and for EV-
ERY day, until He returns to claim his Bride.
Missionary Baptists have not changed. It is true that there are some who
claim, and perhaps wear that name that have changed, but they are so much
in the minority that they are hardly noticed. However, that group of people
who, in doctrine, practice, and perpetuity from the days of Christ down to
this present time, have not changed, nor will they change, as the Master has
promised to be with us always. The sovereignty and independence of each
local church has not changed. We recognize only one law giver and head,
and that is the Lord Himself. We believe that each church is equal in ev-
ery respect, whether it has 10 members or 1,000, whether it is wealthy and
meets in elaborate facilities, or poor and meets in a rented building. As we
have outlined in our articles of agreements.. “This Association shall recog-
nize the freedom of speech as essential to the achievements in its work. It
shall stand or fall on its own conformity to truth!”
The need of co-operative work has not changed. We recognize the dif
ficulties of one church preaching the gospel to every corner of the
10
earth. But together the gospel is being carried to new fields of labor, and for
the first time, the truth is to be heralded to the lost in regions beyond.
Each year it becomes more and more difficult for new churches to se-
cure property and erect buildings because of the restrictions of city ordi-
nances and the prohibitive coasts of property and building materials. We
must join together in sharing the burden. What better way than the church
endorsed “California Mission Development?”
In whatever difficulties the Lord’s churches have found themselves
faced with in the past, they have always been victorious.. We too, in the
ages to come, will also face new challenges, w in the ages to come, will also
face new-challenges, and with the help of the Almighty God that is with us
always, we will be Victorious.
I have not changed. I am still a sinner, though one saved by grace. I
still need your understanding and patience and cooperation as I endeavor
to moderate this twenty-third meeting of the messengers of the Cooperative
Association of Missionary Baptists Churches of California.
11

FOREIGN MISSION REPORT
We your committee on foreign Missions are happy to present the following
report:
We believe that a mission report should properly be something more
than a miniature thesis on the Great Commission. Rather, a mission report
should be a relating to the messengers of what God is doing through His
churches in the realm of foreign missions.
We truly rejoice in the knowledge that churches in California area
spiritual seedbed for mission work throughout the world. We believe that
more foreign mission work emanates from Calif. than from any comparable
number of churches in Missionary Baptist ranks.
Rather than boast of this, may we give the glory to Jesus; and
dedicate ourselves to doing more, and more and more to carry the gospel to
the regions beyond.
We present for your prayerful consideration the following foreign
mission activities sponsored by California’s Missionary Baptist Churches:
W.S. Goulding, sent out by the First Baptist Church of Dominguez (working
in Costa Rica) Neil Morley, sent out by the Antioch Baptist Church of
Lynwood.(working in Gaudalcanal) Jim Gage, sent out by Grace Missionary
Baptist Church of Anaheim(working Colombia S.A.) Antonio Artavia, sent
out by the South Gate Missionary Baptist Church(working in El Salvador)

sent out by the First Missionary Baptist Church of Bellflower. (working

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION
Christian education, properly defined, is the pursuit of truth, which, when
applied, result in the solution of the problems of this present life and the life
hereafter. Consequently, it is the process of logical thinking in a disciplined
manner.
With these thoughts in mind, the words of Paul in Timothy 2:15
take on a more vivid meaning. “Study to shew thyself approved unto God,
a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of
truth.” Thus, in the spectrum of Christian education, it is to be recommended
that, first of all, the pastors should remain students of the Word of God.
Disciplined, systematic Bible study on the part of the ministry, is the key-
note which will introduce a love for genuine pursuit of spiritual truth within
the local assembly. As a result of true discipleship (a perpetual state of
being a learner) on behalf of God-called preachers, the example is provided
for the teaching staff, and ultimately the whole congregation, to become
disciples (learners) of Christ, which is called “Christian education.” Hence,
we recommend that constant programs of meaningful, planned studies of the
doctrines of the Bible be taught to God’s people within the local churches
and church-sponsored Missionary Baptist Schools. Furthermore, we
recommend that Christian education should not consist of mere acquisition
of biblical facts, but that the truths of the Scriptures be applied to set forth
the practicality and necessity of the Christian experience. The Word of God
is not a theoretical hypothesis but it presents a practical, God-approved way
of life. Consequently, true Christian education must prepare each Baptist to
be able to testify intelligently and spiritually of the hope within him, as Peter
admonished: “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts; and be ready always
to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is
in you with meekness and fear.” I Peter 3:15

without auxiliaries to join us in serving Jesus Christ through this medium.
Respectfully Submitted,

HOME MISSION REPORT
We, your Home Missions Committee, wish to recommend to our churches
that we major on the quality of mission work rather than on the quantity of
missions to be started. We encourage our churches to set the precedent of
establishing churches that are self-supporting before the Missionary enters
a new field of labor.
We further recommend that more churches become involved in local
mission support true to the biblical pattern found in Acts. 1:8. In this way
the foundation for all phases of mission work will become firmer and more
effective.
We further recommend the faithful and full support of all our church-
endorsed local missionaries, including the following:
David Housewright of Shasta M.B.Church, Redding
Fred Bronscum of Shatter M.B. Church, Shaffer
James C Nye of First M.B. Church of Bellflower laboring in Huntington Beach
John Peach of Faith M.B. Church, Concord, laboring in the Clearlake area
Douglas Rogers of Landmark M.B. Church Southgate, laboring in Escondido
Clay Hunsucker of First M.B. Church, Fresno, laboring in Blythe Gregory
Andino of Landmark M.B. Church Freedom, laboring in Tehachapi.
Al Soderberg of First M.B. Church, San Diego, laboring in Tijuana
We further acknowledge that as associations we are not empowered
to send missionaries, the sponsoring churches assume the responsibility of
their missionaries and have a substantial share in their support.
Respectfully Submitted,
John Peach

CHRISTIAN LITERATURE COMMITTEE
Last year the Christian Education Committee recommended that:
“Every means possible should be used (according to God’s word) to provide
on education in biblical teachings that will enable every child of God to be
successful for the cause of Christ.”
The best means of accomplishing this objective is our Baptist
literature---Sunday School, B.T.C. Vacation Bible School, and other
teaching help----written by Missionary Baptist writers, published by and
for Missionary Baptist Churches. We your committee recommend that (1)
We commend our writers for their labors; (2). We encourage our churches
to use this literature in every way possible; (3) We encourage more of our
people to use their tallents and knowledge to write more helps; finally (4)
We encourage our people to buy the publications as they become available.

Resolution
Whereas, Brother William “Bill” Havens has dedicated himself to assisting
and promoting the cause of scriptural mission work wherever the Lord may

of mission activity,
Therefore be it resolved that we, the messengers of the churches, composing
the California Cooperative Association, do hereby go on record as approving
and endorsing Bro. Bill Havens for this special work. With such approval
we pray God’s blessings upon him.

Resolution Regarding X-Rated Movies
Whereas the press has carried news of a declaration of intent of the T.V.
network to show on television movies classified as “X-Rated” and whereas
such rated films are held by God-fearing people to be immoral and totally
unfit for family entertainment,
Therefore be it resolved that we, The Glendale Missionary Baptist
Church of Glendale, California, register our complete disapproval of the
aforementioned movies by presenting this resolution to the Cooperative
Association of Missionary Baptist Churches of California when convened
at Visalia, California, April 16 - 18, 1973.
Be it further resolved that we send to the management of the T.V. networks a
letter of protest stating our convictions regarding the showing on television
of “X-Rated” movies.

RESOLUTIONS
Resolution On Committee Reports

Resolution
Whereas the California Missionary Baptist Pastor’s Conference has proven
its benefits both to churches and pastor’s. To churches indirectly and to
the pastor’s and their wives directly by both spiritual uplift and physical
invigoration. We recommend to the churches of California the value of
providing the financial mean where by their pastor and wife attend the
conference. We also recommend that the churches consider the advisability
of providing his travel expenses as well.
Kenneth Hooper
Thomas L. Counts
Resolution
Whereas, several of the larger California cities frequently express an interest
in being the host city to the annual messenger meeting of the American
Baptist Association, Whereas it is now a requirement that no invitation to
the American Baptist Association will be considered unless such invitation
has the approval and sponsorship of local churches in the vicinity of the
inviting city;
And, Whereas it is to the advantage of churches in the California Cooperative
Association to have the annual messenger meeting of the American Baptist
Association anywhere within the State of California;
Therefore be it resolved that we, the messengers of the churches composing
the California Cooperative Association of Missionary Baptist churches,
hereby go on record as approving and offering official sponsorship for any
California city which desires to extend an invitation to the American Baptist
Association.
Be it further resolved that we appoint our moderator or our recording clerk
to convey assurances of such local sponsorship whenever and wherever it
may be required.

GLENDALE MISSIONARY BAPIST CHURCH
1200 CARLTON DRIVE
GLENDALE. CALIFORNIA 91205
April 16, 1973
TO, The Missionary Committee and Messenger Assembly, California
Cooperative Association of Missionary Baptist churches when convened at
Visalia, California, 1973
Dear Brethren:
Some of my preacher brethren feel that my work in the promotion
of missions is worthwhile but that it should not be conducted by a state
missionary elected by the messengers. I respect their feelings in this matter,
even though I do not share them.
If this opinion is still being held by some (and I am persuaded that
it is), then I just might unintentionally be involved in the straining of a very
fine fellowship, and the very thought of such a thing brings me pain, When
something poses a problem in our service to the Lord, I want to be a part of
the solution rather than be a part of the problem. The work is important, I’m
not. The work must increase; I must decrease.
Therefore, I am requesting that our missionary committee remove
my name from the list of missionary candidates for the work’s sake, As
a missionary endorsed and sent out by one of the Lord’s churches I plan
to continue my work in the promotion of missions within the limitations
imposed by school teaching duties and the distance which I am able to travel
during school sessions. Any of our associated churches who, may want to
assist me in offsetting the expenses of my ministry are, of course, free to do
so as I endeavor to hold up the hands of our missionaries on the field.
Yours for a greater mission effort,
C. WILLIAM HAVENS
The Missionaries’ missionary
