MODERATOR’S ADDRESS
J. W. Godbehere
March 21, 1978
INTRODUCTION:
We have assembled today for the 28th session of the messengers of the Coopera-
tive Association of Missionary Baptist Churches of California. I rejoice in the fact
that in this nation we have that right. I further rejoice in the fact that as the children
of God we have the liberty, before God, to exercise the fundamental right of asso-
ciating together as the churches of the Lord Jesus Christ.
I am aware that you have shown a certain respect and honor toward me in placing
me in the position in which I find myself today as Moderator of this Association
of Missionary Baptist Churches. God being my helper I shall try to show myself
worthy of the trust which you have bestowed upon me.
OUR ASSOCIATION:
Like our forefathers, we associate or fellowship (the two words are synonymous
in the Scriptures) in the carrying out of the Great Commission as given to us by
our Lord. Our association is not a super body, a supreme court of appeals, a last
court of resort. It is an association in the preaching of the gospel, in those works of
benevolence as befitting to God, and in the fellowship of training our young men
in the work of the ministry.
Let me illustrate with a statement of the apostle Paul. (Phil. 1:3-5) “1 thank my
God upon every remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all
making request with joy, for your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until
now.”
In this passage of Scripture in the book of Philippians, chapter one, verse 5, the
word “fellowship” is from the Greek word which means: “To have in common
share; to be associated in; to become a sharer in; to become implicated in; to be a
party to; to associate one’s self with by sympathy and assistance; to communicate
with in the way of aid and relief.”
Paul, the apostle, is saying: “I thank my God... for your association in the gospel.”
As the Scriptures will bear it out, he is saying: “You have become a sharer in the
work of the Lord as you rendered assistance in the support of those Missionaries
who were preaching the gospel.” Paul is saying the Philipians had fellowshipped
in the gospel when they became implicated in the carrying out of the Lord’s work,
as they
-13-
sought to be of aid to the “missionary Paul” in the work of the Lord.
The Philippian church associated and assisted the Antioch church in their sup-
port of supplying the needs of the Missionary Paul, “from the first day until now,”
Because of that the apostle stated in verse 7 (Phil. 1:7) “Because I have you in my
heart; inasmuch as both in my bonds, and in the defence and confirmation of the
gospel, ye all are partakers of my grace.” What was that again? Paul said that as a
result of their assistance, fellowship or association in the missionary work of the
apostle Paul, they shared in the work of the missionary. It was as if the Philippi-
ans were on the field with the missionary. Paul stated they were partakers in “my
bonds”, they were partakers in the defence of the gospel, they were partakers in the
confirmation of the gospel.
Is this what Christ was speaking about in Matthew 25th chapter when he said:
“For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat; I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink;
I was a stranger, and you took me in; Naked, and ye clothed me; I was sick, and ye
visited me; I was in prison, and ye came unto me.”
Were the Philippians able to fellowship with the missionary? Were they able
to associate with him when he was hungry, thirsty, naked and in prison? Yes, that
is what Paul states! (“both in my bonds, and in the defence and confirmation of
the gospel.”) They were able to do this by their sympathy, assistance, and as they
shared and communicated with the missionary in the way of aid and relief.
Jesus said in John 4: 36, 37. “And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth
fruit unto life eternal; that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice to-
gether. And here in is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth.”
By their association with the missionary, the Philippians reaped where another
soweth. I might add the good and the bad.
BIBLICAL ASSOCIATION CONSISTS IN THIS FACT:
When the churches of this association have in common share; when they become
associated in and become a sharer in; when they become implicated in and become
a party to, and associate one’s self with by sympathy and assistance to communi-
cate with in the way of aid and relief of the work sponsored by our churches, they
then become ASSOCIATIONAL CHURCHES.
-14-
A church is not a baptist church because she calls herself a Baptist. She is not
a Missionary Baptist Church because she calls herself one. She is not an associa-
tional Baptist Church because that is what she professed to be. Keep this in mind
that a church is known as a Baptist Church because of her faith and heritage. She
is known as a Missionary Baptist Church by her practice (her faith working). A
Church is known as an associational Baptist Church because of her sympathy and
assistance in supporting the work sponsored by the churches of the Lord in their
fulfilling of the great commission.
Our forefathers fellowshipped in the work of missions. They fellowshipped and
associated in works of benevolence, the Jerusalem saints in need can testify to that.
They associated and fellowshipped in the training of young preachers that they
might better prepare themself for a larger and greater ministry for the Lord.
However, I remind you that in each and every case, the fellowship or association
is based upon our coming to the aid and assistance of and communicating with in
the way of aid and relief.
It is when one of our missionaries, or the School which is dedicated to the train-
ing of young preachers receives from your church that “gift of grace” they can truly
say with the apostle Paul: “I thank my God in every remembrance of you, always
in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy for your fellowship in
the gospel.”
They are thankful for your association in the work of God. They are thankful for
our willingness to share with them in the good and the bad, in their bonds and in
the defence and confirmation of the gospel.
I close this address by reminding you that as we have come today to council
about the work of the Lord that when we leave here at the close of this meeting it
will be for that grand purpose that we might really associate and fellowship and
share one with another and to become implicated in the work of the churches in the
carrying out of the great commission.
As such we can only associate as equals, as there is no biblical example where
one church lorded over another body, the small and the large makes no great dif-
ference, each are equally responsible to God for the ministry of THEIR FIELD, the
GOSPEL, and their FAITH.
I would challenge we never deviate from this plan. SHALL WE PRAY. Bro.
Middleton - lead us in prayer.

“FOREIGN MISSION REPORT”
The Word of Grace and Peace by Jesus Christ began in Galilee, Acts 10:37 “That
word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judea, and began from
Gailee, after the baptism which John preached;” many thousands of miles from the
shores of America. It was with a vision of “Foreign Missions” that New Testament
Churches sent Missionaries to America to share with those of the new found lands
the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Therefore we today are a product of “Foreign Mis-
sions.”
The Commission is now our responsibility, that is to preach the Gospel to every
creature. Mark 16:15 “And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach
the gospel to every creature.”
God is no respector of persons, Acts 10:34 “Then Peter opened his mouth and
said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respector of persons;” God knows no ra-
cial barriers, language barriers, or social distinctions. Jesus loves and died for all
mankind. It is possible for all men to be saved, but only if the gospel is preached.
The preaching of the Gospel is where we, the Lord’s New Testament Churches
come into the work of redemption. Rom. 10:14 “How then shall they call on him
in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in him of whom they
have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?”
The Churches of the State Co-operative Association have the greatest opportu-
nity they have ever had, to have a part in the spread of the Gospel.
Many of the Churches of the State of California are sponsoring Missions or Mis-
sionaries in foreign fields. The work in Foreign Fields are: South America; Costa
Rica; Mexico; Japan; Solomon Islands; Korea; Australia; Africa and Canada.
Respectfully submitted,
First Landmark Missionary
Baptist Church of South Gate.

HOME MISSIONS
The Faith Missionary Baptist Church of Concord respectfully submits the fol-
lowing report:
Local, or Home missions, is an important aspect of mission work. State, Inter-
state and Foreign Missions will be strong when emphasis is placed on first things
first. Strong home bases, New Testament Church, should be the central theme of
home missions. If strong local churches are not built, all mission work will come
to naught.
If Home Missions are to be as successful as the Lord desires, we must follow the
command that Jesus gave to His church as recorded in Matthew 4:19, “Follow me,
and I will make you fishers of men.” Following the Lord takes personal involve-
ment.
When Christ led His church out as far as Bethany, He gave Her the message to
preach, the area to preach the message, and the promise of the coming Comforter to
give the power to present the message. Luke 24: 46-53, then He left Her.
When Jesus left His church, the membership did not sit idly by and let the world
die without a witness. They were busy for their master. Mark 16:20 records, “They
went forth, and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming
the word with signs following.” Three things are mentioned:
1. They went forth.
2. They preached the word everywhere.
3. The Lord confirmed the word.
This is local mission work. Luke 24:53 records, “and were continually in the
temple, praising and blessing God.” Three activities are mentioned:
1. Continually in the temple.
2. Praising God.
3. Blessing God.
Acts 1: 12-26 records futher activities of this church in home missions endeavors.
1. They assembled.
2. They prayed.
3. They discussed the scriptures.
4. They chose one to take the position of Judas. This is clear teaching that ef-
fective mission work involves activity in the energy of the Lord. Active, energetic,
Holy Spirit motivated churches are the ideal ones for the Lord to call one or more
of Her men for mission work.
When the Lord led the church at Antioch to do a more effective mission work,
there are definite proofs that she was
-17-
an active, energetic, Holy Spirit directed church. Acts 13:1-5.
1. They were ministering.
2. They were fasting.
3. They were praying.
In the membership of that assembly, the Holy Spirit identified particular men. He
directed the church in Antioch to set aside two of these particular men, (Barnabas
and Saul) fort or to the work He had called them. Readily we can see that the Holy
Spirit calls men to do mission work who are members of New Testament Churches.
He directs the church to send them forth. When we recognize that God calls, the
Holy Spirit directs and the church sends forth those men, we will continue to see
effective, God honoring Home Missions.
Therefore, we, the Faith Missionary Baptist Church of Concord, recommend that
we continue to follow God’s pattern of local missions: God called, Holy Spirit di-
rected, church sent men. That we let the Lord make us to be more active, energetic
and Holy Spirit energized as we seek to advance Home Missions.
That we continue to encourage the strengthening of the local church as to make
more effective all areas of mission work.
That we discourage the setting of salaries, rules, or anything by messenger, that
would effect the local churches jurisdiction over the missionary and mission work.
Done by order of the Faith Missionary Baptist Church of Concord on March 15,
1978.

MEMORIAL COMMITTEE
Of all the trials and difficulties of life, it surely would be the loss of a loved one
that would be most grevious. Friendships and loving relationships can be built over
months, years, even a life time, only to be interrupted by death.
Yet, it is only an interruption, and as Paul wrote, “But we do not want you to be
uninformed, brethren, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve, as do
the rest who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so
God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus.” I Thess. 4: 13,14.
Let us not grieve over the absence of these loved ones, but look forward to that
glad reunion day of old friends, loved ones and our precious Saviour Jesus Christ.
Respecfully submitted
Our loss is Heaven’s gain

What is Christian Literature? It would seem that in order to produce Christian
Literature one must first be a Christian. Acts 11:26 says. “And the disciples were
called Christians first in Antioch.” We believe that one who is not a member of a
New Testament Church can not properly be called a Christian and is not capable of
producing true Christian Literature.
We reject the idea that, “this is a good book to read, but it is not sound where the
church is concerned.” We do not encourage the reading of literature produced by
those who are not able to understand the mysteries of the kingdom as mentioned in
Matthew 13:11.
We recommend the Bible as the source of Christian Literature. The use of other
Christian Literature, such as the A.B.A. Sunday School material, is to be used as a
help and guide only with the Bible being the textbook. We reject
-21-
Protestant writings as being useful helps to our understanding of the scripture and
count them as un sound and misleading.
We would also recommend that each church member make a complete and care-
ful study of the Bible in order that each one might be grounded in the faith that was
once delivered to the Saints.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION REPORT:
March 15, 1978
Education is the process of cultivating and training the mind. Christian education
differs from all other forms of education, in that it is the process of cultivating and
training by acquistion of knowledge according to the Word of God, for the particu-
lar purpose of making the student of the Word of God become conformable to the
Author and Finisher of the Faith.
The areas of Christian education are wide and varied. The ideal situation is to
begin training up a child in the way he should go at a young age. This is of course,
the responsibility of the Christian home. But because of the large number of chil-
dren who are unable to have the proper guidance at home, we recommend a strong,
Christ centered, Bible teaching Sunday School to instill within these young minds
the seed of truth of the Word of God. The on going work of our churches should be
the upgrading, and strengthening of all Sunday School departments.
The area of special educational training is fast becoming an essential part of
the work of the Missionary Baptist Churches of Calif. with ever increasing need
for pastors within the ranks of our churches and missionaries to go into new fields
ripening to the gospel. We are impressed more and more of the need for a strong
sound, Bible teaching seminary for the training in special educational areas. Be-
cause of this vital need and the strong stand of C.M.B.I. we recommend this school
for support of our churches.
The work of C.M.B.I. should not be limited to pastors and missionaries though.
The need for trained youth directors and music directors is enormous within our
state. For this reason we recommend a closer look at C.M.B.I. to those
-22-
whom God has dealt with or is dealing with for a special area of service.
Respectfully Submitted,

HISTORY AND ARCHIVES COMMITTEE
The following is a summary of the work of the History and Archives Committee
for the past year.
1.
The microfilm viewer and 20 rolls of microfilm, covering various
association minutes, papers, books, and thesis are in the library at C.M.B.I.
2.
The files for most of the minutes of the various Missionary Baptist
Associations in California are in the possession of the committee.
3.
The Church and ordained preacher information survey started
about one year ago is very incomplete with only about 20% of the churches
and pastors responding.
4.
The microfilming of “The Baptist Sentinal” has not been complet-
ed due to lack of copies of the paper prior to 1959.
5.
We have oral histories on cassett tapes by a few of our senior
preachers in California.
6.
We have purchased five copies of a thesis that gives a good ac-
count of the early work of Missionary Baptist in California.
We recommend the History of past meeting places of our State Association along
with the moderators and clerks be included in our State minutes each year.
We continue to need and seek your help and financial assistance in collecting and
preserving historical materials concerning Missionary Baptist work in California.
