Foreign Mission Report
1979
“But ye shall receive power, after the Holy Spirit is come upon you; and ye shall be wit-
nesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part
of the earth” (Acts 1:8)
“Unto the uttermost part of the earth” is the theme for our foreign mission work. In our
state, we have churches now sponsoring foreign missions and missionaries in eight differ-
ent countries. There are other churches now preparing and making plans to send men and
their families into new foreign fields. The theme, “Unto the uttermost part of the earth.” is
truly active in California.
In the past year, reports from our missionaries indicate progresses in the work. Souls
have been saved and baptized. Missions are becoming stronger and more independent. Men
have dedicated their lives to the ministry. Schools are continuing to operate with success in
training native pastors. Native publications have been printed and received with great suc-
cess. These and other spiritual blessings have been ours to enjoy.
However, in reviewing our last year of foreign mission work, we find many set backs
which seemingly would hamper the work of Christ. In almost every foreign country where
our churches have mission points, unfortunate circumstances have taken place. Hardships
and trials have come and death has taken its toll. Yet many of these circumstances, as Paul
said in Philippians 1:12, “have turned out for the greater progress of the gospel”. When God
allows these trials to take place, we usually don’t immediately understand. However, we
need to trust God that His purpose in them is for the furtherance of His work. For this, may
we give thanks to our God who gives us renewed hope in fulfilling the goal of seeing the
church of the Lord Jesus Christ established in other lands.
May we each strive to help share financially and take part prayerfully in the foreign mis-
sion endeavours of our sister churches. For in so doing, we look forward to another year
with encouraged hearts and uplifted eyes on the fields set before us, together.
Respectfully submitted,

Home Mission Report
Home missions begin within each local church, within each family of the local church
and within the local community of each church. It is said of Andrew in John 1:40-42, “he
first findeth his own brother Simon”.
Home missions are the cornerstone of all foreign missions. As in all things the local
church is the center of all phases of mission work.
Prayer, support and encouragement should be given to each local missionary and mission
project.
Since local missions are totally dependent upon the local churches it is of the utmost
importance there be agreement, communication and harmony between mission projects and
the local church. This can be accomplished through regular reports on the part of the mis-
sionary and a personal knowledge of their needs and problems by the local church.

Christian Literature Report
The Apostle Paul in his second letter to Timothy said, “Study to show thyself approved
unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the work of truth.”
This passage is a command to Timothy, and is also a command for God’s people today. We
are living in a time when there is so much false teaching and false literature being distrib-
uted that it is easy to be led astray if one is not aware of what the word of God teaches.
Therefore we would recommend that God’s people spend more time in the study and
meditation of God’s word.
We also recommend the use of our American Baptist Association Literature and the
many aids they have available for teaching in our churches. We believe it to be sound and
true to the teachings of the Bible.
To keep up with the progress of Missionary Baptists around the world, we would recom-
mend the several Missionary Baptist papers that are published throughout our work, and
also the continued support of these papers.

Christian Education Report
April 4, 1979
Christian education is the universal imperative of our times. Solomon said, “Train up
a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” Christian
education logically grows out of the Commission that Christ gave to His churches. Baptists
do have an educational debt to the world, and it can be liquidated only by Baptist teaching.
Education is not merely the acquisition but the use of knowledge. In fact, an educational
program involves the four steps of acquisition, assimilation, appropriation and application.
Many have been TOLD. Some have been TAUGHT. Few have been TRAINED. Educa-
tion involves training. A person may acquire information, but he is not educated until this
knowledge becomes a part of his life and is used to serve himself and others. This involves
training.
The religious training of a child is a complex and comprehensive process. It involves his
intellect, his emotions, and his will. For this reason, Baptists should have a strong teaching
program in both their Sunday School and B.T.C. programs. That a child may know, ad-
equate provision must be made in our educational program for him to acquire information,
have the opportunity to worship, and the occasion to express it.
Adults and special called workers should have an opportunity for further training be-
yond the local church. Since it is evident that most local churches cannot meet this need
alone, we can co-operate in supporting the Seminaries that God has given us in the State of
California. For several years C.M.B. I. at Bellflower has proven herself worthy of support.
More recently F.M.B.I. at Fresno has been established for similar training and support. This
century’s call for culture is louder and clearer than ever before. So there have been some
churches that are sponsoring extension courses. May God bless them every one. We must
not be neglectful of the doors that have been opened for us to advance Christian education.
In the words of Dr. Travis Hubbard, “Studying is hard work, and most of us by nature are
lazy.” Pray, work for, and participate in our Christian education programs that we may not
be found lazy in this matter.

whereas our brethren who are members of the missions are called upon to participate in all
other phases of church work; be it resolved that we recommend that the members of our
missions be given the privilege of partaking of the Lord’s Supper in whatever place they are
assembled under the watch care of our missionaries.

DOCTRINAL STATEMENT RESOLUTION
Whereas there are differing opinions among Missionary Baptists as to the definition of
a scriptural Baptist Church, and
Whereas agreement on such a definition is essential to the harmonious functioning of
this association of churches, and
Whereas Doctrinal Statement Number 10 in our minutes lacks a detailed definition,
Therefore be it resolved that Doctrinal Statement Number 10 be amended to deleting
the entire statement and replacing it with the following statement, hereafter to be known as
Doctrinal Statement Number 10:
10. We believe that Jesus Christ established His church, the Body of Christ, dur-
ing His ministry on earth and that it is only/always a local, visible assembly of
scripturally baptized believers in covenant relationship to carry out the Commis-
sion of the Lord Jesus Christ, and each church is an independent, self-governing
body, and no other ecclesiastical body may exercise authority over it. We believe
that Jesus Christ gave the Great Commission and the keeping of the integrity of
the two ordinances to His New Testament Churches only.

MEMORIAL REPORT
From time immemorial men have sought for a “better country” than this fleeting, passing
life. The Bible clearly points out heaven as being that very thing — a better country, and
believers have secured title to it.
In the past association year, many have been called from among the Lord’s Churches that
are represented here today, and have entered that “better country”.
Their passing from among us has brought us closer to the realization that we too must
soon depart this walk of life and that what we are going to do for the Lord, we must be
about it.
Let us look to the future and continue to build in the faith in which they labored.
“Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth; yea, saith the Spirit, that
they may rest from their labors; and their works do follow them.” (Rev. 14:13)

MODERATOR’S ADDRESS
One year ago you elected to honor me once again by asking me to serve as your modera-
tor for the Co-operative Association of Missionary Baptist Churches of California in this
year of our Lord
Much has happened upon the religious scene since our last associational meeting to
indicate very clearly that sin, corruption, immorality, greed and lust have a way of finding
their way into the so called religious realm as well as in the political and business world.
Jonestown and the rapid rise of the cults are only a few of the indicators to suggest we live
in a time of rapid moral decline unlike anything faced by our forefathers.
I am reminded of a statement made by one of our well known comedians who annually
hosts a telethon for the purpose of raising several millions of dollars for Muscular Dystro-
phy. In calling attention to the remark, I mean no disrespect to this worthy cause of raising
a financial backing to search out and find a solution to this very crippling disease which
attacks mostly our young people. I thank God for those who actively work toward this goal,
and for those who give of their means to search out and destroy such a crippler.
might observe that if Missionary Baptists would place as much emphasis upon their time
and their financial support to the gospel cause as this well televised program does, the gos-
pel might have a more generous flow. The remark speak of is concerning the network of
television stations who donate much time, labor and money to show the television program
over the whole nation. Mr. Lewis refers to this network of stations as the LOVE NET-
WORK. That is well and good and probably deserves this worthy title, however I would
suggest to you today that when all of the facts are in, and time has run its course that the
only organization worthy of such a title will be the churches of the Lord Jesus Christ.
I therefore address you today as the genuine and true Love Network, the churches of
the Lord Jesus Christ, whose purpose is to convey the message of God’s Love for mankind.
The work of the churches is the one work which will endure, storing up in heaven treasure
which cannot be stolen, and where moth nor rust is able to corrupt.
In researching why we lose many of our people to the pleasures of a mad world, to the
cults which are having phenomenal growth, and to other sources I have found basically four
things which they seem to be seeking. It appears to me they are seeking for something chal-
lenging and meaningful in life. They want their life to count for something.
Young and old alike, they search for this in the churches, but because of the sub-stan-
dard of Christianity, the seemingly unconcern and indifference of many of the leaders of the
churches, Sunday school teachers, pastors and evangelists, they do not find this challenging
and meaningful life.
Our young people turn to our school system which has a sex and drug syndrome but
before long they are aware that what they are seeking is not there. Their only alternative, to
their mind, is to turn to the wild and weird cults wherein they hope to find this meaningful
life, but this unhappily is not the answer.
Men seek in life these four matters, a sense of purpose; a sense of belonging; a sense
of group identity; and a sense of total commitment to a cause.
31
Strange as it may seem these are the things which God seeks in the lives of the children
of God.
A sense of purpose — God has a purpose with your life. He wants you to contribute
something to this world in which we live. He wants the world to be a better place because
of you. Jesus put it this way:
“Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savor, wherewith shall it be
salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under
foot of men.” Matt.5:13
Salt is a preserver. The sanity and the moral integrity of the world is maintained by the
faithful and dedicated lives of the saints of God as they are about the business of God in the
churches of the Lord Jesus Christ. “Ye are the salt of the earth”, suggesting that because of
the churches the earth is blessed! Salt is also that which flavors, and again God’s purpose
is for the earth to be brought into a better balance because of the lives of the saints of God.
Christ also stated:
“Ye are the light of the world, a city that is set on an hill cannot be hid, neither do men
light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto
all that are in the house.”
Matt. 5:14,15.
The only true light which lighteth this world is that which is manifested in the lives of
the saints of God who live their life in the light of God’s program for him. I realize there is
much more involved in the purpose of God for all mankind, but I suggest that this a grand
purpose for the children of God who seek to make their life more meaningful.
A sense of belonging — Mankind has a desire to belong. Young people want to belong
to the various clubs available. As they grow to maturity that sense of belonging does not
decrease, but increases. The various college clubs attest to this. The Odd Fellows, Masons,
Woodmen of the world, and a hundred other clubs with the corresponding women’s orga-
nizations indicate this desire to belong lingers perhaps throughout the lifetime of a person.
God has something to fill this desire and that is the sense of belonging to the grandest fam-
ily which man can belong to, and that is the family of God. To become the children of God
having a common Father, Our Father which is in heaven, born of the Spirit of God in the
New Birth, “that is belonging”.
The desire for a group identity — God has a way to fulfill this desire. To be identified
with the family of God in the one local organization where they can find true fellowship
with God, Christ and with one another, and that is the church of the Lord Jesus Christ. It
is in this capacity they can be identified with the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. It is
in this capacity they can be identified with the disciples of Christ. That is group identity!
The desire for a total commitment — Is this not what Christ desires for every child of
God, total commitment? Surely the answer would be yes. That is why Jesus spoke again
and again of total commitment.
“If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his
32
cross, and follow me.” Matt. 16:24.
“If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother and wife, and children
and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.” Luke
14:26.
AGAIN — “So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he
cannot be my disciple.” Luke 14: 33.
AGAIN —”If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples” John 8:31.
Jesus taught his disciples that anything less than a total commitment to God is no com-
mitment at all. If you are not totally committed to the cause of Christ then you are not com-
mitted to God at all, your life is a sham, it is a farce, it is hypocrisy.
If there is such an organization that is truly a Love Network, then it surely must be
God’s organization which can fill these desires of mankind, a sense of purpose; a sense of
belonging; a group identity; and the possibility of total commitment to something really
worthwhile in life.
In a world rapidly becoming more and more immoral, it would appear that the cause of
Christ was having very little effect. Looking about us we might become discouraged at the
seemingly insignificant result of the labors of the Lord’s Church. When we compare from
worldly standards we might well throw up our hands in despair, but the work of the Lord is
not viewed correctly from worldly standards ... but Godly! The end result of the work of the
Lord’s churches is expressed in Rev. 5: 9, 10.
“And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open
the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out
of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation and hast made us unto our God
kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.”
The end result of the work of Christ is noted in this passage
Out of every kindred, and
tongue, and people, and nation:”. How successful is the work of the churches of the Lord
Jesus Christ? If we view them from the standpoint of our local work, we might well be
distressed, but when viewed from Heaven’s throne, we find another picture.
God’s Love Network will have carried the message of the love of God from near and far,
and souls from every walk of life, from every nation, will have responded to the love of
God, having their sins washed in the blood of the Lamb.
With this great promise, let us labor faithfully in our fields of responsibilities to the best
of our abilities, that we might show that God has the answer to all of life’s little problems
and crises. Let us encourage the brethren to be consistent in their practice as well as in
their beliefs; to be knowledgeable about the Word of God, for it is the greatest safeguard to
confusion; to place Christ first and foremost in all things, and to learn the blessings of being
able to admit when you have wronged a fellow man, accepting the responsibilities for your
mistakes and learning the joy of reconciliation between brothers. Then perhaps our young
people will find the pattern they seek in the HOUSE OF GOD, and be spared the torment
encountered in our public schools, the cults, and in a pleasure mad world.
